The 20-year-old pickup driver, unnamed, who is a resident of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh has came to Uttar pradesh state of India in connection with the election campaign when his high speed pickup truck collided with another truck. Professor Siddharth Lakhotia, Head of the Department, Cardio Thoracic Surgery,
Banaras Hindu University, who led the operation team, told that the accident was so severe that two feet long and a two-and-a-half-inch thick iron rod penetrated the right chest through & through & came out from the lower part of the neck in back side. Because of this, there was a serious injury in the right lungs. Air and blood flooded the chest cavity.
He also had a severe injury in the brain. Right face, eye and right foot suffered injuries, after the accident. When this patient came to us in the Trauma Center Banaras Hindu University, he was unconscious. It seemed almost impossible that he will survive in such a critical condition, the only way to save him was to remove the Rod by surgery. Since patient was Bhopal resident, so there was no one with him. In such a situation hospital staff provided all the facilities for his treatment. Professor S.K. Mathur, Head of the Department of Anaethesia and Superintendent Sundarlal Hospital informed that in such a situation, it is a challenge and complicated work to give anaethesia to the patient.
Due to the intensity of the accident, iron rod got bent after piercing the patient’s chest, due to which it was not possible to remove without the help of staff of the emergency department of the hospital, with great skill they cut the curved portion of the iron rod and then Dr. Siddharth Lakhotia and his team carried out the operation. The operation lasted for nearly 3 hours. The patient has now recovered and will be discharged within a few days. After such accidents, most of patients die at accident site only due to bleeding and shock. Obeying traffic rules and speed limit are the only ways to prevent them. BHU hospital is the only place in eastern Uttar Pradesh where facilities for such surgery are available
